Iowa City Student Built House Dedication
October 1, 2018 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
A dedication and open house for a home built entirely by students will be held Monday, Oct. 1 from 3 – 5 p.m. at 1881 Dickenson Lane in Iowa City. The project is sponsored by members of The Greater Iowa City Area Home Builders Association (HBA) and its Vocational Training Council, which organizes workforce development projects in the Iowa City area, in partnership with Kirkwood Community College.
The celebration will recognize the students and their hard work. Additionally, keys to the house will be presented to owner Reach for Your Potential, a local nonprofit organization that provides services for people with disabilities.
Thirteen students of all ages from six different high schools and one college participated in the “student built” initiative, which broke ground in June with Governor Kim Reynolds in attendance. They learned important skills, earned college credit and gave back to the community.
“There is a lack of skilled workers in the trades and a need to provide kids technical education earlier,” said Greater Iowa City Area HBA Executive Officer Karyl Bohnsack. “We must build our talent pipeline and projects like the student built house is one way to make that happen.”
